75 Pinball Machines Placed in Children’s Hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses!

As of September 30th, 2024, Project Pinball Charity has successfully dedicated 75 Pinball Machines to Children’s Hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses across the United States!

Ultimate Dream Team: Mattel’s Hot Wheels® and Project Pinball Charity’s Pinball Placement Program

Since the release of Hot Wheels by American Pinball in 2020, Project Pinball Charity has placed four of the pinball machines within Children’s Hospitals and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHCs) nationwide to share therapeutic benefits as part of their Pinball Placement Program.

It’s not the same without the flame! Project Pinball Charity knows this to be true. Each time the Team rolls a Hot Wheels pinball machine into a Children’s Hospital or RMHC, young patients’ faces light up with recognition and utter delight. Parents and Staff are excited as well, nostalgia running through their minds as the first debut of Hot Wheels® was on May 18, 1968.

Fifty-six years of joy has driven across the world, touching the lives of generations past and present making Hot Wheels® one of the most recognizable brands in the world. This is why Project Pinball Charity teamed up with American Pinball in 2020, bringing that familiarity into medical environments to aid in rehabilitation, recovery, and respite through pinball play.

Every day across the nation, young patients and their families are displaced from their homes and routines and forced into foreign situations and places due to serious health-related issues. The familiarity of a pinball machine, especially one as recognizable as a Hot Wheels®, acclimates patients and families to medical environments while providing a specific type of comfort and joy to young patients that is only achieved through interactive play.

The first Dedication of a Hot Wheels® pinball machine within Project Pinball Charity’s Pinball Placement Program was at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO on 12/11/2020. This Dedication was particularly special as it was one of the first since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Team knew the therapeutic benefits of a coping tool like a pinball machine would be critical while navigating the isolation, stagnation, and affliction caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

A highlight of this Dedication was honoring the memory of Kerby Fowler, the Father of the Volunteer Technician at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Considering the experience everyone was feeling globally at that time, Patients and their families especially needed a positive boost of hope. Kerby Fowler’s words upon the plague were spot on, reading, “Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.” Kerby’s words are read every day by patients and families in St. Louis, MO, filling their minds and hearts with joy, encouragement, and most importantly hope in the midst of crisis.

The second Dedication of a Hot Wheels® pinball machine was at the Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone Health in New York City, NY on 06/21/2022. This Dedication was extremely close to heart for the Project Pinball Charity Team as it was in memory of Dahlia Rowan, one of the Charity’s long-time supporters and friends. Hot Wheels® was the perfect choice to honor Dahlia, inspiring kids to be kids and families to pause their stress and bond over a shared interest–that is exactly what Dahlia wanted.

The Hot Wheels® machine is now a core part of the landscape in the Game Room at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital with a sparkling view of the East River. Patients and families have access to a multitude of therapeutic benefits to help them with rehabilitation, all thanks to community support, the classic recognition of Mattel’s Hot Wheels®, and the guaranteed fun.

The third Dedication of a Hot Wheels® pinball machine was at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga in Chattanooga, TN on 06/20/2023. Immediately drawn to the machine, as soon as the Hot Wheels pinball machine was set up five siblings and their father walked into the Game Room. They recognized the theme instantly and desperately wanted relief from their stress after spending all night in the local Children’s hospital. Hot Wheels® pinball became their shared focus.

The father’s attention was captured as well, reminding him of the Hot Wheels® he saw as a child. Everyone in attendance at the Dedication was moved, seeing first hand the positive influence a pinball machine has on a person’s demeanor and mood instantaneously. Ronald McDonald House Charities are the epitome of care and compassion, and Project Pinball Charity is honored to partner with local Houses, increasing and amplifying the resources available to patients and families in crisis with pinball machines like Hot Wheels.

The fourth and most recent Dedication of a Hot Wheels pinball machine was at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Boston Harbor in Charlestown, MA on 04/10/2024. The patients and families staying at the RMHC of Boston Harbor had never played pinball before. At times young patients are hesitant when new people and items are introduced to their safe space. Patients know the feeling of overstimulation, spending hours being poked and pricked. However, Hot Wheels® is the perfect game for these first-time players.

New players already know the world of Hot Wheels®, easily engaging with the theme and immediately feeling comforted and intrigued. Any anxiety, fear, or stress melts away as they pull the plunger and flip their first pinball into the playfield, hearing the familiar sounds of cars zipping around a track.

Positively benefitting the health of young patients and their families is Project Pinball Charity’s main concern and a pinball machine’s consistent therapeutic benefits fit perfectly with the flux of a medical environment. Mattel’s Hot Wheels® significantly increases the success of this dynamic relationship, ensuring that all generations are inspired and nurtured for years to come.

THE FREEDOM TO PLAY PINBALL

THE FREEDOM TO PLAY PINBALL
Do you remember your first exposure to a pinball machine and the excitement it brought you? Do you ever wonder what it would be like if you weren’t able to play pinball?
There are some wonderful people coming to the Expo who have dedicated their lives to helping children who are hospitalized with medical issues. They are the charity known as Project Pinball. Daniel Spolar and his staff have placed many pinball machines in Hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses across the country to provide a spark of enjoyment during what can be a traumatic stay in a Hospital for kids.
Unfortunately, not everyone has the physical capability to reach the flipper buttons on a pinball machine. So what can be done to help those who are physically limited to enjoy this wonderful experience we take for granted? The Project Pinball team is working with several companies to develop game controllers that will give everyone “the freedom to play pinball.” The controllers are specifically designed to allow people with disabilities to play pinball and be included in pinball events and tournaments. Those who are in a wheel chair or have other problems working the flippers will be able to use a newly developed controllers to play pinball by using the remote flipper buttons on the new controller.
This year the Project Pinball booth will have 10 or more pins from several different manufacturers set up for you to play with the new inclusive and accessible controllers. Come and try them out and provide your feedback on how they work!
They will also be hosting an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Inclusive Pinball Tournament named “Freedom to Play” that will feature the ADA Enhanced Game Controllers. Join in on the tournament and experience these controllers first hand! It’s absolutely free and there will be some neat prizes to win by just entering the tournament. Top finishers will receive plaques and more cool prizes! The link to the event page for the Tournament is: https://facebook.com/events/s/freedom-to-play-pinball-tourna/1440906456753482/?mibextid=RQdjqZ.
This year the Project Pinball booth will also feature a Space Jam themed pinball machine that was designed and developed for actor Christopher Reeve who was paralyzed from the shoulders down after suffering a fall from a horse. This special pinball machine was made so he could enjoy a game of pinball during his stays at the hospital.

School Days Pinball Debut- Lockwood Elementary School

Special Needs Teacher at Lockwood Elementary School in Eaton Rapids, MI-
Ms. Gochenour has updated us with her student’s progress since the School Days pinball machine has been dedicated this year!
School Days is a rethemed Williams Ding Dong.

“The students have been super excited about learning their scores. I’m finding that our number recognition is improving since we talk about scores in the thousands now.

Overall, the pinball machine is an amazing addition to our classroom, as well as to Lockwood in general. We have staff that utilizes the machine almost daily. We have specific students that will ask for Pinball Play on a daily basis. The games have been easy to fit into our routine at school. To be honest, now that it is here, I can’t imagine life without it!

Thanks again and please let the team know that we truly appreciate their generosity. The pinball machine is absolutely making a positive impact at Lockwood Elementary!”

Introduce Our New Marketing & Communications Specialist

The Project Pinball Team are proud to officially announce our newest addition!

Meet Taj Kniceley! She was born and raised in Springfield, OH, and attended Wittenberg University. She is currently completing online Gardening and Landscape courses at Stratford Career Institute and will be finishing her bachelor’s degree in English at Michigan State University. She also works at her neighborhood market in the cheese department and in the garden center! A little over two years ago she moved to Michigan and now resides in Grand Rapids with her significant other, two cats, a leopard gecko, 20 plus plants, and whatever wildlife that finds their way to her.

“I’m very excited to be a part of this community! It’s so important to free our minds of the stress reality can sometimes swallow us in and pinball is a great outlet. When I’m not helping out the charity, I like to hike, restore antiques, and get lost playing Mario on my old Game Boy. My goal is to help the team at Project Pinball grow the charity even more and continue creating fun and safe spaces for people of all ages to relax and recover. I’m looking forward to my first machine dedication–it will definitely be one for the books!”

Taj will oversee and help coordinate all of Project Pinball’s events and marketing. If you are interested in pairing up with Taj on a fundraising event OR if you are are interested in Project Pinball volunteer opportunities, you can contact her at develop.projectpinball@gmail.com.

She will be attending the 38th Annual Pinball Expo in Schaumburg, IL, with the team on October 19th-22nd. Be sure to give her a warm welcome to the pinball community! She might even accept a high-score challenge on her favorite machine, The Mandalorian.

Help Us Save The Project Pinball Mobile!

We need your help! (See the end of the post for the link)
As you’ve seen the last few days, the PinMobile is essential to not only the team but also to the charity by helping us place pinball machines nationwide.

Every year the Love Across America (LAA) Tour adds on about 15,000 miles, and therefore the engine is no longer as healthy as it once was, causing oil pressure to steadily leak. Our goal is to raise $10,000 before the next LAA tour and replace the engine so we can take our esteemed workhorse on the road for the next chapter of its life.
If the Escalade reaches retirement, then traveling to dedications, expos, and fundraising events will prove to be difficult considering the lack of appropriate resources.

Every dollar counts, and we thank you in advance with love in our hearts. The Escalade is part of the Project Pinball family and will do anything to keep it that way!

PinMobile Highlight!

Here is a PinMobile Highlight!

In the bitter cold of December 2020 in Alexandria VA, our charity team came across a pinhead that owned a Gottlieb EM Paradise (1965) machine. After touring the Northeast and dedicating 8 machines in 14 days, the PinMobile now only held our suitcases and supplies.

The owner, Theodore (Ted) Webne, cherished this machine, however, because of its age he was unable to provide proper care and maintenance. Ted knew that without help the machine would soon be idle. So he donated it to Project Pinball, and after repacking the Escalade in his driveway we had two guarantees: the machine will be restored and he is welcome to visit anytime to play! Presently, the machine is in working condition at HQ in Bonita Springs, FL, and we are hoping to host Ted and his family soon for a well-deserved game night. We are truly overwhelmed with emotion when recalling this encounter, and without the help of the charity’s Escalade, this restoration would not have been possible. And of course, many thanks to Ted!
